Understanding the use of video in 3D graphics and web content development
By John K.
I found that the book is a detailed and technically accurate introduction to digital video and TV. Yet, it contains on math. Being a 3D graphics programmer and web application/platform developer, I always wanted to learn more on these topics that I did not have a chance to study in detail. After all, my movie animations are viewed in the web by video streaming! So, it is nice to know about video compression and streaming standards, when developing animated content. I also enjoyed reading the use of video analysis in postproduction, that can range from game to movie development! Moreover, the chapter of three-dimensional digital television introduced me to the new 3DTV era, giving me rise to produce 3D animation movies.

Very useful in understanding digial media concepts for application development
By Justin Roberts
Being a programmer developing digital media applications, I am very interested in
grasping issues related to digital video acquisition, processing, analysis and compression.
This book helped me greatly in understanding correctly these topics and grasping
concepts like motion estimation, noise filtering, transform-based video compression.
The chapters on video and TV standards, like MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG-7 and
DVB, ATSC, ISDB, DIMB were very useful as well.

The book is the ideal introduction to digital video and TV to be used in developing
digital media tools and applications e.g. for web environments.

Full technical, yet easy to read coverage of digital video and TV
By John
This is an outstanding book, having exhaustive technical coverage of all topics
related to digital video and television. It has no math and I found it very easy to understand.
It covers the entire video production and distribution chain from image/video shooting
to video processing, postproduction, compression and broadcasting.
New topics are of special interest: like 3DTV and digital cinema.
It is ideal for university and college students specializing on digital media, TV,
multimedia, web design, signal/image/video processing, graphics
coming either from the creative or the technical side.

Poor tool to learn from initially, but good reference later.
By A Customer
This book was too difficult to understand when used for a lower division class. The authors write as if you already know linear algebra, differential equations and vector calculus in the first semester, although these classes are not prerequisates to take the courses that this book covers (Intro physics 1-3). The authors include a math toolbox in almost every chapter of the book, which is useless if you haven't seen the math before. It seems as if the authors think that you can understand this stuff by osmosis. If the authors took the time to recall how they felt when they were students and how they learned, I think that this book would be better. I also feel that the seemingly Feinmann style is okay, but other avenues of solving problems could have been explored, as not everyone is a visual learner. In the preface for this book, they should raise the math prerequisates, or learn how to explain things in a more elementary manner. Tipler, Douglas Giancoli and Halliday & Resnik do a better job of explaining the concepts to novice physics students. In short, I think that this book is good to refer to as an upper division student, but is not indicated for a new physics student.

a fundamentally solid book
By A Customer
I've been working with this book for three semesters now, and I feel it's strong, specifically in that:
1. The authors recognize that many beginning students need problem solving strategies; they supply a good method and are consistent with its use.
2. The book makes it abundantly clear what the big ideas are going into (and coming out of) each chapter. This was a very helpful study tool.
3. Their is surprisingly little "hand-waving" in this book, which I think is special for an introductory book on physics.
4. The problems have a _wide_ range of difficulty levels, and there are a lot of them.
5. The book covers a terrific amount of material, including basic mechanics, waves, optics, thermodynamics, and E&M. There's a short section on special relativity and other modern physics too, which is a nice appetite-whetter for students who will continue on.
This book can be very useful, but the organizational structure might at first seem a little opaque. After some getting used to, I have found the book a great resource. I would definitely recommend it for an introductory sequence at almost any school. I think the book might fit in best at more rigorous institutions, because it doesn't really pull many punches in the early chapters (though it does a good job making challenging material digestible). A good instructor could effectively use it at any institution, though--it's written to be understood.
One side comment regarding other reviews: The intro physics courses at SF State (where some of the reviewers used this book, including me) are unfortunately out of sequence, with students taking intro E&M with as little as one semester of calculus under their belts. This is obviously a big problem and I think some criticism has been leveled at the book (unfairly) because of it.

Excellent intro text but users need some math maturity
By A Customer
I've used this book for the 3-semester intro to physics sequence taught at San Francisco State and have been thoroughly pleased with it. Basic principles and key concepts are heavily emphasized. The authors tend to de-emphasize memorizing derived formulae (which leads to plug-and-chug problem solving) and focuses on breaking down a problem into its basic elements, which is in my opinion the best way to approach problems in physics. Some might find the math a bit rigorous for introductory physics but it's the same math as in Giancoli or Tipler which is just calculus (some differential equations is used later in the text but so does the others). This is not a "learn by example" text, since the examples tend to emphasize additional elements of the concepts (usually by showing some of the math techniques) but the text does show well thought out outlines to solving problems. It really has given me an excellent foundation in physics.

Five stars for quality material: however, negative one and a half stars for its misinformation = overall 3 ½ stars
By Dan Sherman
First, a note: I have published a review on Amazon and elsewhere of "Framing the West: The Western Survey Photographs of Timothy H. O'Sullivan", Toby Jurovics, et al, Yale University Press, 2010. In that review I state that "Framing the West" is as excellent complimentary companion to earlier publications like James Horan's (1966) "Timothy O'Sullivan: America's Forgotten Photographer ", ...

The above statement holds true, but with certain qualifications. "Timothy O'Sullivan, America's Forgotten Photographer" appears to have been meticulously researched, with Horan including numerous facsimile copies of original documents involving O'Sullivan; an impressive feature seldom found it a biographical survey of this nature. However: although the book is loaded with very good in-depth information, it also contains a number of glaring errors. I do recommend it, provided caution is exercised when using it; use it in conjunction with one or more of the other books on O'Sullivan --- Framing the West (above), Joel Snyder (1981) "American Frontiers - the Photographs of Timothy H. O'Sullivan, 1867 - 1874", Keith F. Davis and Jane L. Aspinwall (2011) Timothy H. O'Sullivan: The King Survey Photographs (Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art). Despite being sprinkled with misinformation, "Forgotten Photographer" has very good material that is not found elsewhere.

SOME OF THE PROBLEMS

The first incorrect item in the book is the caption under the front piece photo. This misinformation, however, is not the fault of Horan. This book was first published in 1966, with a reprint in 1982. Horan researched this book from the mid 1950's through the mid 1960's; during that time period this photo was believed to be a self-portrait of O'Sullivan while working on the Darien Survey in 1870; it has since been determined to be John Moran with the Darien Expedition in 1871 (Russell Norton, Stereo World Vol. 3, No. 2). Determining attribution of photographs taken on the Darien Surveys can be problematic. Naval Commander T. O. Selfridge led survey parties to the Isthmus of Darien (Panama) in 1870, 1871 and 1873. Timothy O'Sullivan was the photographer in 1870, John Moran was with the 1871 expedition as their photographer, and there was no photographer in 1873. It appears the Navy lumped all the negatives together without listing the photographer or the year they were taken -- this, however, is part of another story. The photograph mentioned above has an "official" caption of "Photographer at Pinogana", it has been determined that O'Sullivan was not at Pinogana; the attribution of some of the Darien Expedition photos can be sorted out in this manner. I do not know specifically when the first known photograph of Timothy O'Sullivan entered the public realm, but I believe it may have been in the 1970's. It was at that time that E. Marshall Pywell donated some Pywell Family documents to the National Archives, this included a photograph of Timothy O'Sullivan. Also the Library of Congress, prints and photographs division has photographs of Timothy O'Sullivan and his wife Laura Pywell that they acquired from E. Marshall Pywell in 2010; E. Marshall Pywell is the great-grand nephew of Laura Pywell.

On pages one and two Horan has some serious misinformation relating to the photo shown (pg.2) and the accompanying text (pg.1 & 2). He captions it "O'Sullivan's view of Brady in the wheat field, scene of General McPherson's death at Gettysburg." The negative for this photo is at the National Archives (NWDNS-111-B-111) and is titled "Woods in Which General John F. Reynolds Was Killed. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 1863." The picture is of McPherson's Woods where General Reynolds died. I believe that most Civil War scholars and experts on Civil War photography would agree that Brady is one of the people shown in this photo, but I do not believe any of them would attribute it to O'Sullivan; O'Sullivan was no longer with Brady at the time of Gettysburg, he was with Alexander Gardner. Horan himself acknowledges that O'Sullivan was not with Brady at this time; on page xii, he states "O'Sullivan served his apprenticeship with Brady but left the old photographer to join Alexander Gardner, that intellectual Scot, when Gardner and Brady parted shortly after the start of the Civil War." Civil War photo historian Bob Zeller places the Brady / Gardner split somewhere between November 1862 and May 1863 (The Blue and Gray in Black and White, page 101); Gettysburg occurred from 1 - 3 July, 1863, after O'Sullivan had left Brady. In the text accompanying this photo, Horan describes a possible scenario involving O'Sullivan and Brady at this scene. He also attempts to personify O'Sullivan here and elsewhere throughout the book. He tries to paint a picture for us of what O'Sullivan was like at the personal level, what his character and traits were. He even entitles chapter one "A Shy Man"; he writes on page 2 "... Timothy H. O'Sullivan was a shy man, perhaps even a lonely man who never sought praise or credit." This contradicts accounts from his contemporaries; although O'Sullivan never kept a diary or journal, many of his contemporaries did. Despite all of the in depth research done by Horan, he apparently did not consult the journals kept by other members of Clarence King's fortieth parallel survey or those of the Wheeler expedition; he makes no mention of them in the text or in his notes, except in his acknowledgments on page xiii, that he did see G. K. Gilbert's field notes of the accent of the Colorado River by the Wheeler expedition in 1871. He may not have known where these journals were, or for that matter he may not have even been aware of their existence, he conducted his research in the 1950s and 60s; it was a far different time and environment in which to conduct research of this nature. Also, he was the first one to tackle the subject of who O'Sullivan was; he did not have the work of others to build on. Two things in the historical record tell me O'Sullivan was not a shy man. (1) - It is well documented throughout the King and Wheeler reports that when the party split into various groups O'Sullivan was placed in charge of some of these side parties. Both King and Wheeler repeatedly placed him in positions of authority and leadership; a shy man is not an ideal leader. Perhaps, soft spoken and somewhat reserved, but not shy; a leader must have the ability to be assertive when the circumstances require it. (2) - The journals and records of O'Sullivan's contemporaries draw a different portrait of O'Sullivan. Chapter one is labeled "A Shy Man" then on page 34 he writes "O'Sullivan was never a boastful man."

William W. Bailey, the botanist on King's 40th parallel survey, writes in his diary on May 11, 1867 after leaving New York aboard a steamer for Aspinwall, Panama in transit to California, "Messrs King and Custer occupied one of these rooms and O'Sullivan, Ridgeway and myself the other, and most jolly times we had in them." Bailey and O'Sullivan developed a close friendship, as Bailey writes of O'Sullivan later in his journal (page 40) "He and I became great friends always tenting together and chumming generally." Bailey likely knew O'Sullivan better than most of the other members of the 40th Parallel Expedition. Therefore, we can consider Bailey a bit of an authority on O'Sullivan when he refers to him in a letter to his brother Loring Bailey on August 14, 1867 that "His [O'Sullivan] chief fault is his reminiscences of the Potomac Army ... One would think he had slept with Grant and Meade and was the direct confident of Stanton" (Loring Woart Bailey papers, Huntington Library, San Marino, California). This does not sound like a shy and never boastful man that never sought praise or credit. He may not have been soft spoken either; Grove Karl Gilbert, geologist with the Wheeler Survey, writes in his journal on 21 September 1871 that it was a very windy day and states " ... it interfered with photography and kept O'Sullivan in a perpetual state of profanity." I have to at least somewhat fault Horan for attempting to personify O'Sullivan when he had such an extremely limited amount of data to work with. Also, on page 42 Horan creates a scenario involving O'Sullivan with the engineers building pontoon bridges during the Civil War - they come under attack - he writes: "Men screamed and fell. O'Sullivan calmly went on taking his pictures." Where did he get that information?

Chapter 4 is about O'Sullivan and the King Survey from 1867 through 1869. Despite the fact that researching O'Sullivan in the `50s and `60s was far different than today, I do not know how Horan missed the fact that O'Sullivan returned to Clarence King's 40th Parallel Expedition in 1872; on page 254, in reference to the year 1872, Horan writes "where O'Sullivan went that year or what he did we don't know, but he did return to Wheeler's Expedition in 1873 and again in 1875." We do know where O'Sullivan was in 1872; he was back with the King Survey. Also, how did Horan arrive at "Wheeler's Expedition in 1873 and again in 1875?" On page 257 he states "in 1874 O'Sullivan again was missing but he returned to the West in 1875 for the last time", informing us O'Sullivan was with Wheeler's Expedition in 1871, 1873 and 1875. O'Sullivan was with Wheeler in 1871, 1873 and 1874, not 1875; even the stereographic photos he took in 1874 are prominently labeled "Expedition of 1874".

Also, on page 254, in reference to the year 1872 and the Wheeler Survey, Horan states, "the following year O'Sullivan's place was taken by Dr. Bell, an adventurous English physician who was an expert photographer." The William Bell that replaced O'Sullivan in 1872 was "an expert photographer", but was not the English physician Dr. William Bell. There has been a lot of confusion over these two people, contemporaries, both with the name William Bell. One was a Medical Doctor that went to work as a photographer for Union Pacific Railroad, eastern division (later Kansas Pacific Railway) in 1867. The other a photographer that worked after the Civil War for the Army Medical Museum as its chief photographer and spent much of 1865 making photographs of soldiers with various diseases, wounds, and amputations, many of which were published in the book, "Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion." We have two contemporaries with the same name, one a medical doctor that became a photographer (briefly) and the other a photographer that took medical pictures, this is the William Bell that replaced O'Sullivan on Wheeler's 1872 survey. Over the years various researchers have sorted out the who, where, when, etc of these two people. Today the identity of each "William Bell" is quite well established. Despite the fact that "who's who" is generally well known, people today still misidentify these two individuals.

Another misidentified item, that may only be partially Horan's fault, is on page 39; he has captioned the photograph at the top of the page "A lightweight photographer's wagon carrying a box labeled "Brady's." The man on the left is believed to be O'Sullivan ..." This photograph is identified in the Library of Congress collection (LC-B8184-B-5077) as "Brady's photo outfit in front of Petersburg, Va", (date created 1864?) The Petersburg area was under assault from General Grant from June 1864 through March 1865, therefore, the exact date this photo may have been taken is uncertain. Although no known photos of O'Sullivan were in the public realm at the time Horan wrote this, with which to compare this one, one thing was known and was certain; O'Sullivan was not with Brady during the "Siege of Petersburg." The two people seated in front of the wagon are identified by Susan E. Williams as Egbert G. Fowx and Thomas C. Roche, two of Brady's photographers ("Richmond Again Taken" The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, 2002 - Vol. 110, No 4, p 443). I have not contacted Susan to determine her source for identifying these two individuals, but I am aware that she has conducted extensive research in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution and the Virginia Historical Society involving the question of mis-attribution of Civil War photography.

There are other errors and shortcomings in this book, but this is just a general review, not a complete comprehensive appraisal of his work. The book has a lot of good information, but Horan is at times a bit inconsistent. He keeps putting O'Sullivan back with Brady after Gardner and O'Sullivan split from Brady. He also contradicts himself (albeit a rather minor incident) after mentioning O'Sullivan's work in Alexander Gardner's "Sketch Book of the Civil War", he states on page xi, "over half the negatives were made by O'Sullivan", on page 172 he reports this number to be 42 of 100, then on page 319 he writes that it is 45 of 100; my count is 44 of 100.

Again, provided caution is exercised when using it, I do recommend it. His inclusion of facsimile copies of historical documents is a valued feature. I find most of the problems in this book are located in his treatment of O'Sullivan during the Civil War and his attempt to personify O'Sullivan; he apparently did not have the journals / diaries of O'Sullivan's contemporaries to consult regarding O'Sullivan's personal life and his personality, to me it seems he did not have any real facts to work with - he was just guessing. Although I fault some aspects of his work, he is to be commended in others.

Make Something Up: Stories You Can't Unread, by Chuck Palahniuk

Chuck Palahniuk, literature's favorite transgressive author, gives us twenty-one stories and one novella in Make Something Up, a compilation that disturbs and delights in equal measure. In "Expedition," fans will be thrilled to find to see a side of Tyler Durden never seen before in a precursor story to Fight Club. And in other stories, the absurdity of both life and death are on full display: in "Zombies," the best and brightest of a high school prep school become tragically addicted to the latest drug craze—electric shocks from cardiac defibrillators; in "Knock, Knock," a son hopes to tell one last off-color joke to a father in his final moments; and in "Tunnel of Love," a massage therapist runs the curious practice of providing "relief" to dying clients. Funny, caustic, bizarre, poignant, these stories represent everything readers have come to love and expect from Chuck Palahniuk. You'll never forget them. Just try.

Review
Praise for Chuck Palahniuk and Make Something Up:

"Palahniuk doesn't write for tourists. He writes for hard-core devotees drawn to the wild, angry imagination on display and the taboo-busting humor."
—The New York Times

"Palahniuk is a bracingly toxic purveyor of dread and mounting horror. He makes nihilism fun."
—Vanity Fair

“Palahniuk displays a Swiftian gift for satire, as well as a knack for crafting mesmerizing sentences."
—San Francisco Examiner

“Few contemporary writers mix the outrageous and the hilarious with greater zest.”
 —Newsday

"Few authors have captured the pathologies of modern life quite like Palahniuk."
—Rocky Mountain News

“Chuck Palahniuk is one of the most intriguing writers of our time.”
—Tucson Citizen

"For the first time, Palahniuk collects his short stories, which feature his signature humor, horror, and grit. [The] other stories deal with fire, bodily fluids, malfunctions, critiques of material society, bestiality, a bewitched tennis ball, and a murder at a Burning Man-type retreat. The collection is essential for Palahniuk fans and will likely win him some new ones."
—Publishers Weekly

"Palahniuk comes roaring back from a stretch of experimentalism with 23 tales celebrating his ongoing affection for the macabre... Pathos and panic and penitence from one of the darkest and most singular minds in contemporary American lit."
—Kirkus Reviews

"Even as you likely suffer debilitating motion sickness from the jarring emotional turns on every other page, you’ll be inescapably restrained by an author who knows exactly what he’s doing and has you right where he wants you. Palahniuk’s uniquely modern style throws out any antiquated conventions that could keep him from destroying any expectations that keep you in complacent narrative comfort."
—Booklist

Knock-Knock

My old man, he makes everything into a Big Joke. What can I say? The old man loves to get a laugh. Growing up, half the time I didn’t have a clue what his jokes were about, but I laughed anyways. Down at the barbershop, it didn’t matter how many guys my father let take cuts ahead of him in line, he just wanted to sit there all Saturday and crack people up. Make folks bust a gut. Getting his hair cut was definitely a low priority.

He says, “Stop me if you’ve heard this one before . . .” The way my old man tells it, he walks into the oncologist’s office and he says, “After the chemotherapy, will I be able to play the violin?”

In response, the oncologist says, “It’s metastasized. You’ve got six months to live . . .”

And working his eyebrows like Groucho Marx, tapping the ash from an invisible cigar, my old man says, “Six months?” He says, “I want a second opinion.”

So the oncologist, he says, “Okay, you’ve got cancer and your jokes stink.”

So they do chemotherapy, and they give him some radiation like they do even if the shit burns him up so bad on the inside he tells me that taking a piss is like passing razor blades. He’s still every Saturday down by the barbershop telling jokes even if now he’s bald as a cue ball. I mean, he’s skinny as a bald skeleton, and he’s getting to haul around one of those cylinders of oxygen under pressure, like some little version of a ball-and-chain. He walks into the barbershop dragging that pressurized cylinder of oxygen with the tube of it going up and looping around his nose, over his ears, and around his bald head, and he says, “Just a little off the top, please.” And folks laugh. Understand me: My old man is no Uncle Milty. He’s no Edgar Bergen. The man’s skinny as a Halloween skeleton and bald and going to be dead by six weeks so it don’t matter what he says, folks are going to hee-haw like donkeys just out of their genuine affection for him.

But, seriously, I’m not doing him justice. It’s my fault if this doesn’t come across, but my old man is funnier than he sounds. Maybe his sense of humor is a talent I didn’t inherit. Back when I was his little Charlie McCarthy, the whole time growing up, he used to ask me, “Knock-knock?”

I’d say, “Who’s there?”

He’d say, “Old Lady . . .”

I’d say, “Old Lady, who?”

And he’d say, “Wow, I didn’t know you could yodel!”

Me, I didn’t get it. I was so stupid, I was seven years old and still stuck in the first grade. I didn’t know Switzerland from Shinola, but I want for my old man to love me so I learned to laugh. Whatever he says, I laugh. By “Old Lady” my guess is he means my mom who ran away and left us. All’s my old man will say about her is how she was a “Real Looker” who just couldn’t take a joke. She just was NOT a Good Sport.

He used to ask me, “When that Vinnie van Gogh cut off his ear and sent it to the whore he was so crazy about, how’d he send it?”

The punch line is “He sent it by ‘ear mail,’ ” but being seven years old, I was still stuck back on not knowing who van Gogh is or what’s a whore, and nothing kills a joke faster than asking my old man to explain himself. So when my old man says, “What do you get when you cross a pig with Count Dracula?” . . . I knew to never ask, “What’s a ‘Count Dracula’?” I’d just get a big laugh ready for when he tells me, “A ‘Ham-pire’!”

And when he says, “Knock-knock . . .”

And I say, “Who’s there?” And he says, “Radio.”

And I say, “Radio who?” And he’s ALREADY started to bust a gut when he says, “Radio not I’m going to cum in your mouth . . .” Then—what the hell—I just keep laughing. My whole growing up I figure I’m just too ignorant to appreciate a good joke. Me, my teachers still haven’t covered long division and all the multiple-cation tables so it’s not my old man’s fault I don’t know what’s “cum.”

My old lady, who abandoned us, he says she hated that joke so maybe I inherited her lack of humor. But love . . . I mean you have to love your old man. I mean, after you’re born it’s not like you get a choice. Nobody wants to see their old man breathing out of some tank and going into the hospital to die sky-high on morphine and he’s not eating a bite of the red-flavored Jell-O they serve for dinner.

Stop me if I already told you this one: but my old man gets that prostrate cancer that’s not even like cancer because it takes twenty, thirty years before we even know he’s so sick, and the next thing I know is I’m trying to remember all the stuff he’s taught me. Like, if you spray some WD-40 on the shovel blade before you dig a hole the digging will go a lot easier. And he taught me how to squeeze a trigger instead of pulling it and wrecking my aim. He taught me to remove bloodstains. And he taught me jokes . . . lots of jokes.

And, sure, he’s no Robin Williams, but I watched this movie one time about Robin Williams who gets dressed up with a red rubber ball on his nose and this big rainbow-colored afro wig and those big clown shoes with a fake carnation stuck in his buttonhole of his shirt that squirts water, and the guy’s a hotshot doctor who makes these little kids with cancer laugh so hard they stop dying. Understand me: These bald kid skeletons—who look worse off than my old man—they get HEALTHY, and that whole movie is based on a True Story.

What I mean is, we all know that Laughter is the Best Medicine. All that time being stuck in the hospital Waiting Room, even I read the Reader’s Digest. And we’ve all heard the true story about the guy with a brain cancer the size of a grapefruit inside his skull and he’s about to croak—all the doctors and priests and experts say he’s a goner—only he forces himself to watch nonstop movies about the Three Stooges. This Stage Four cancer guy forces himself to laugh nonstop at Abbott and Costello and Laurel and Hardy and those Marx brothers, and he gets healed by the end-orphans and oxy-generated blood.

So I figure, what’ve I got to lose? All I need to do is remember some of my old man’s favorite gags and get him started back laughing on the road to recovery. I figure, what could it hurt?

So this grown‑up son walks into his father’s hospice room, pulls up a chair beside the bed, and sits down. The son looks into his old man’s pale, dying face and says: “So this blond gal walks into a neighborhood bar where she’s never been before, and she’s got tits out to HERE and a tight little heinie and she asks the bartender for a Michelob, and he serves her a Michelob, except he sneaks a Mickey Finn into her bottle and this blonde goes unconscious, and every guy in the bar leans her over the edge of the pool table and hikes up her skirt and fucks her, and at closing time they slap her awake and tell her she’s got to leave. And every few days this gal with the tits and the ass walks in and asks for a Michelob and gets a Mickey Finn and gets fucked by the crowd until one day she walks in and asks the bartender, can he maybe give her a Budweiser instead?”

Granted—I have NOT landed this particular shaggy-dog story since I was in the first grade, but my old man used to love this next part . . .

The bartender smiles so nice and says, “What? You don’t like Michelob no more?”

And this Real Looker, she leans over the bar, all confidential and she whispers, “Just between you and me . . .” she whispers, “Michelob makes my pussy hurt . . .”

The first time I learned that joke, when my old man taught it to me, I didn’t know what was “pussy.” I didn’t know “Mickey Finn.” I didn’t know what folks meant when they talked about “fucking,” but I knew all this talk made my old man laugh. And when he told me to stand up and tell that joke in the barbershop it made the barbers and every old man reading detective magazines laugh until half of them blew spit and snot and chewing tobacco out their noses.

Now the grown‑up son tells his old dying father this joke, just the two of them alone in that hospital room, late-late at night, and—guess what—his old man doesn’t laugh. So the son tries another old favorite, he tells the joke about the Traveling Salesman who gets a phone call from some Farmer’s Daughter he met on the road a couple months before, and she says, “Remember me? We had some laughs, and I was a good sport?” and the man says, “How’re you doing?” and she says, “I’m pregnant, and I’m going to kill myself.” And the salesman, he says, “Damn . . . you ARE a good sport!”

At seven years old I could REALLY put that joke over—but, tonight the old man’s still not laughing. How I learned to say “I Love You” was by laughing for my old man—even if I had to fake it—and that’s all I want in return. All I want from him is a laugh, just one laugh, and he’s not coming across with even a giggle. Not a snicker. Not even a groan. And worse than not-laughing, the old man squints his eyes shut, tight, and opens them brimming with tears, and one fat tear floods out the bottom of each eye and washes down each cheek. The old man’s gasping his big toothless mouth like he can’t get enough air, crying big tears down the wrinkles of both cheeks, just soaking his pillow. So this kid—who’s nobody’s little kid, not anymore—but who can’t seem to forget these jokes, he reaches into his pants pocket and gets out a fake carnation flower that just-for-laughs sprays water all over the old crybaby’s face.

The kid tells about the Polack who’s carrying a rifle through the woods when he comes across a naked gal laying back on a bed of soft green moss with her legs spread, and this gal is a Real Looker, and she looks at the Polack and his gun and says, “What’re you doing?” And the Polack says, “I’m hunting for game.” And this Real Looker, she gives him a big wink and she says, “I’m game.”

So—POW!—the Polack shoots her. It used to be this joke constituted a gold-plated, bona fide, sure-thing laugh riot, but the old man just keeps dying. He’s still crying and not even making an effort to laugh, and no matter what, the old man has got to meet me halfway. I can’t save him if he doesn’t want to live. I ask him, “What do you get when you cross a faggot with a kike?” I ask him, “What’s the difference between dog shit and a nigger?”

And he’s still not getting any better. I’m thinking maybe the cancer’s got into his ears. With the morphine and what all, it could be he can’t hear me. So just to test, can he hear me, I lean into his crybaby face and I ask, “How do you get a nun pregnant?” Then, more loud, maybe too loud for this being a mackerel-snapper hospital, I yell, “You FUCK her!”

In my desperation I try fag jokes and wetback jokes and kike jokes—really, every effective course of treatment known to medical science—and the old man’s still slipping away. Lying here, in this bed, is the man who made EVERYTHING into a Big Joke. Just the fact he’s not biting scares the shit out of me. I’m yelling, “Knock-knock!” and when he says nothing in response it’s the same as him not having a pulse. I’m yelling, “Knock-knock!”

I’m yelling, “Why did the Existentialist cross the road?”

And he’s STILL dying, the old man’s leaving me not knowing the answer to anything. He’s abandoning me while I’m still so fucking stupid. In my desperation I reach out to take the limp, blue fingers of his cold-cold dying hand and he doesn’t flinch even when I grind a Joy Buzzer against the blue skin of his ice-cold palm. I’m yelling, “Knock-knock?”

I’m yelling, “Why’d the Old Lady walk out on her husband and her four-year-old kid?”

Nothing kills a joke like asking my old man to explain himself, and lying there in that bed, he stops breathing. No heartbeat. Totally flatlined.

So this kid who’s sitting bedside in this hospital room, late-late at night he takes the joke equivalent of those electric paddles doctors use to stop your heart attack, the hee-haw equivalent of what a paramedic Robin Williams would use on you in some Clown Emergency Room—a kind of Three Stooges defibrillator—the kid takes a big, creamy, heaped‑up custard pie topped with a thick-thick layer of whipped cream, the same as Charlie Chaplin would save your life with, and the kid reaches that pie up sky-high overhead, as high as the kid can reach, and brings it down, hard, lightning-fast, slam-dunking it hard as the blast from a Polack’s shotgun—POW!—right in his old man’s kisser.

And despite the miraculous, well-documented healing powers of the Comedic Arts my old man dies taking a big bloody shit in his bed.

No, really, it’s funnier than it sounds. Please, don’t blame my old man. If you’re not laughing at this point, it’s my fault. I just didn’t tell it right, you know, you mess up a punch line and you can totally botch even the best joke. For example, I went back to the barbershop and told them how he died and how I tried to save him, right up to and including the custard pie and how the hospital had their security goons escort me up to the crazy ward for a little seventy-two-hour observation. And even telling that part, I fucked it up—because those barbershop guys just looked at me. I told them about seeing—and smelling—my old man, dead and smeared all over with blood and shit and whipped cream, all that stink and sugar, and they looked and looked at me, the barbers and the old guys chewing tobacco, and nobody laughed. Standing in that same barbershop all these years later, I say, “Knock-knock.”

if Charlie Kaufman and Quentin Tarantino had a baby ....
By audrey frances
I've never read anything by Chuck Palahniuk before, though I have a couple of his books in my gigantic to-read pile that used to sit on the bedside table but now dominates the entire dresser top, and I love the movie Fight Club. So I thought this was a good opportunity to sample his writing, as this book contains 22 short stories and a novella.

First off let me say, pay attention to the subtitle: Stories You Can't Unread. And there are a few you might want to. These stories are rather savage and disturbing, but also funny and sometimes insightful, as if Charlie Kaufman and Quentin Tarantino had a baby. And then jabbed it with pins and abandoned it at a Burning Man festival. The protagonists are no prizes, usually men but not always, but the parents come off far worse. If there is a theme here (besides the mental defects of pervs) it is the brutal portrayal of bad parenting, time and again.

Do you know how sometimes a guy will get drunk and he'll tell the women around him, "If you only knew what guys think, you'd never talk to any of us again!" I feel like this is a glimpse into that world, from a barbershop that keeps pictures of murdered women under the dirty magazines to a high schooler who fulfills an essential service for the school beauties, this is not the way one wants to think of one's brothers and fathers.

At the same time it is creative and sometimes hysterical, adroit and playful. There's even a Tyler Durden prequel, which was pretty good, and there were quite a few punch line endings. I rated each story and came up with an average of 6.3/10. I enjoyed these stories, but also dreaded going back to the book, not sure if the next story would have me laughing or wanting to take a shower, or both. If you don't enjoy challenging reading, I would leave this alone, and even adventurous readers may find themselves pushing their limits.

While the back cover says this work "spans more than a decade", there is no information or commentary with the stories individually or the book as a whole, which would have been nice, though I can see the author might just want the work to speak for itself.

Dig for that Gem!
By Dr. E
I have loved Chuck Palahniuk since I read "Guts" as an undergraduate. That short story is one that remains with readers ... for life. I love the anecdote of Palahniuk conducting live readings of the piece and watching folks pass-out cold. If you have not read "Guts" ... get to it! Therefore, when I saw this collection, I was stoked.

As with all short-stories collections, there will favorites and there will be "not-so-favorites." For me, I approach a collection such as this with the hope of finding one new breathing-taking piece that speaks to me. (And, then, I'll probably make a PDF of it and share it with my students). So think of reading this collection like searching for gem in the mountain-side ... you'll get an awful lot of dirt, but there might that perfect specimen somewhere in there.

Now, obviously, many love Palahniuk for Fight Club (and for good reason). If your experience with this author is confined to that nuanced, complex piece of literature, do know that you won't find the same cavalcade postmodern delights here. Instead, you will probably find stories that make you truly uncomfortable (and that you will repeatedly consider abandoning). The discomfort here is pretty prevalent; therefore, if you do not enjoy being push outside of your comfort zone, you might find this experience unbearable. (The language and imagery is graphic. Not "Breaking Bad graphic" ... but truly, genuinely graphic).

I teach film and literature for a living (at the college-level). Some of these stories challenged my own tolerance ... one, in particular, I barely finished (and felt no catharsis or resolution at the conclusion ... which is fine ... that hollow feeling shows that Palahniuk is able to conjure those complex emotions).

If you revel in the bleakness of Bret Easton Ellis, this collection might work for you. Dig for that gem!

Without a doubt a must read for fans of Chuck Palahniuk, the rest of us should approach with caution…

"Build it. Burn it. Build it. Burn it. Worship and Destroy. The festival was civilization on Fast-Forward."
- Torcher

While I was familiar with Chuck Palahniuk, from the movie 'Fight Club', I had never read any of his books. A friend of mine, who is a longtime fan, always suggested that if I was to read one of his books I should approach it with caution. I decided to start this review by sharing the advise he gave me years ago.

'Make something up' is a compilation of 22 stories written throughout a decade (I understand some of these have been published before) As such, some of these tales suffer when compared to one another, there are some very good ones and some others feel like filler material. The opening story, 'Knock, knock', does a great job preparing the readers on what to expect from the rest of the book, what at first seems like a heart-warming story about a guy and his father, turns into a chaotic situation in the end.

The product description labels these stories as funny, caustic, bizarre and poignant. In my opinion? Those labels fall short to describe this work. Some of these stories you will wish you could unread. After reading the book and actually enjoying most of it I found myself wondering what does that say about me?

Either way, the humor and social commentary I enjoyed so much from 'Fight Club' is present throughout the book. Characters questioning their purpose and very existence while committing the most devious acts (some in the name of love) are the common denominator in these stories.

I do not mean to spoil anything so I don't want to get into details, having said that, 'Expedition' is being mentioned everywhere as it represents the return of Tyler Durden in a story prior to 'Fight Club', do not go into it expecting too much like I did, the story is quite god but my expectation was so high that the end result was a little bit underwhelming. There are some other good stories in this book, 'Zombies' is one of them, 'Why Coyote never had money for parking', 'Torcher' and my favorite, 'Inclinations'.

Enjoyable overall, it is without a doubt a must read for fans of Chuck Palahniuk, the rest of us should approach with caution...

Charles is back and what mischief does he want? Alice feels the longing for Charles like she did before. Its like a drug and she craves him, his body and its dragging her back but she doesn’t want to her the love she has in her life. The twists and turns keep on coming. This story had my interest and attention from the first page. It really speaks to you because there is always a “Charles” in a woman’s life and it’s how you handle it. I loved how the author wrote this story and enjoyed the ending. This story reminded me of this quote- “ Love doesn't hurt. Expectations do.”

My rating: 4.6 stars ****

Different type of storyline.
By Lyndsey F.
I was given an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Blind girl was about 2 college girls who try to sneak into a party but they are in for a surprise. Alice was a young 18 year old virgin who happens to land a billionaire who just can't give her the one thing she craves, his love. He goes out of his way in the worst possible way, to get her attention. She second guesses her engagement to a new man who loves her for her. Who does she end up with in the end, I'll let you read to find out.

I really felt the ending was not what I wanted. I was surprised to feel angry at the choice and how it was done. If she was so sad at the choice "she picked " she could have chosen differently on her own. I was just taken aback at how emotionally invested everyone was then bam, it was the end and it's not who or how I wanted it to go. How does the "bad guy" go to "good guy" in my head was beyond me.
Otherwise a good read I just was expecting a very different ending.

Was it love or fascination?
By LRC
I received an ARC for an honest review. I love everything this author writes and this is no exception. It a little different than her other books. Two 18 year-old girls Alice and her friend Gabby crash a secret Blind Girl Party where 12 blindfolded girls chose from the wealthy men who drop their names in the fishbowls in front of the girl's gilded cage. Alice meets Charles Kent that night, a billionaire who whisks her upstairs at the hotel before she chooses him. He offers her a seductive affair where he will take care of her and protect her but never love her. She thinks that's okay for awhile but realises she needs more from him that he can't give so she leaves him. He says she'll regret it. Five years later Alice has a new life, a fiance, but still remembers Charles. Will she ever get closure? What did he mean about regret? Does she still or did she ever love Charles? You have to read this book!!!
