I have learned a lot from tis book too

This is a witty, comprehensive, and carefully researched book. The author's experience with different cultures and her deep understanding of her own culture makes for fascinating reading for both international people and Americans.

I consider it a long overdue exposé of American behavior because Asitimbay is fearless in the issues she covers--they are the very same topics we are afraid to discuss in public. For example, the author explores how we self-identify ourselves in the U.S., both racially and ethnically, versus how our government categorizes us. When Asitimbay reveals the various ways we practice our patriotism and religion in the U.S., she clearly breaks new ground as a cultural commentator.

In addition to being an important book from a sociological standpoint, What's Up America? is also a beautifully written one. It will appeal to readers of many backgrounds because it is so easy to read.

A Foreigner's Guide to Understanding Americans is an extremely useful guide for foreign travelers or exchange students visiting America, as well as American hosts who may not be aware of the unconscious, ingrained aspects of their culture that their foreign guest will have to adapt to. What's Up America? succinctly summarizes in plain terms the broad history, unwritten social mores, and generally accepted rules of conduct in American society, in particular emphasizing both the difference between American society as it really is versus how it is portrayed in TV and movies, and particular American language idioms that may be confusing to a non-native English speaker. Chapters cover dating, religion, eating habits, economic and business customs, and much more. Though especially intended for foreign travelers, What's Up America? is fascinating reading for Americans as well, since it gives a no-nonsense, plain-terms summary of America's modern culture, revealing subconsciously internalized forces that drive us in spite of ourselves.

Entertaining and Illuminating - for visitors and citizens!

This breezy book skips, digs, and zooms across the United States' cultural landscape. The author, an ESL college instructor, entertains readers with unconventional insights based on census figures, national surveys, and personal experiences. Sometimes provocative, often witty, and always direct, the book deserves a wide readership among visiting students, recent immigrants, and American citizens. Of course, being a college instructor, I try to resist the considerable appeal of the broad generalizations, but these snapshots of "typical Americana" illuminate the nation's many eccentric traditions, habits, and lifestyles with humor and style. Easier to read than David Brooks or Bill Bryerson, this accessible book fills a niche between popular culture and the academic world. Call this sociology light with a comic twist. I strongly recommend this clever book of accessible, enjoyable cultural criticism. Perfect for a beach day - or gift to a friend traveling to the United States for the first time.

This text did meet my expectations for my intended purpose and level of use. However, as another review mentioned, there are several editing problems that go beyond minor grammatical errors. Sometimes they are a little humerous, like page 301, which has two diagrams in correctly labeled. It is beautifully illustrated with good use of color. I'm satisfied with my purchase.

From 3rd year medical student with a passion for Neurology...

Having an insatiable thirst for all things neurology, this is my 3rd tome of clinical neurology.
My main complaints lie with the numerous editing and grammatical errors that seriously distract from trying to gleen knowledge from the text and diagrams.
For example there is a diagram of the open medulla on pg. 289 that shows arrows pointing to the various cranial nerve nuclei which is missing what one of the arrows is supposed to show (arrow with no description/indication of what that part is supposed to be (spinal tract and nucleus of CN V?)).
There are some interesting rare conditions that I haven't seen covered in other books, but even some of these are frustrated by incorrect labelling (Bungarotoxin of the Many-banded Krait sea snake comes from BungaRUS multicinctus, not Bungaro multicinctus). It's many little things like this that take the book down a couple of stars for me as this is a medical text and should be better put together and loved than this.

The Bond of Love is one of my favorite books written by Reverend Hicks. It is a beautiful outline and layout of God's Will for marriage, how to follow His Will and achieve the type of marriage that is vibrant and pleasing to God. The author explains what the Bible reveal concerning marriage and divorce, the four classes of marriage, God's blessing on marriage, God's termination of natural relationships and His continuance of spiritual marriage relationships.
This book speaks to your heart as you read it. There is a profound poetic section in this book that resonates with such melodious tones of beauty as I read it, I would read it over and over again. My husband and I have read this book together several times and are constantly enlightened and enlivened. This book truly promotes... a bond of love!

Noted English zoologist Morris presents some 600 human gestures from around the world. Each page succinctly demonstrates two to three gestures, giving the meaning and the area of the world where this gesture is used. The small line drawings that clarify each gesture make this book superior to similar "dictionary" books on the subject. The book does suffer slightly in two regards. First, an index to meanings would have helped; short of scanning the entire book, there is no way to find all the gestures that, for example, express "love." Second, the book is organized by body parts, but where does the reader look if a gesture uses two or more body parts? A double listing might have been more helpful. This title will complement Morris's earlier works, Manwatching: A Field Guide to Human Behavior (1977) and Gestures (1979, co-authored) and is recommended for larger public and academic libraries.?Stella I. Morris and his researchers have identified more than 600 gestures that are used internationally and locally to indicate emotions, attitudes, and messages. Not linked to sign language, these gestures are informal and are used in conversation or in lieu of words. Each gesture is classified by the major body part involved (e.g., eye wink or thumb hitch). Then, the meaning, action, and background are spelled out, accompanied by a helpful drawing. Some of these gestures are used universally, others are primarily used in specific countries. The author has certainly awakened the critiquing of the usually overlooked sensation that occurs in us at times of puzzlement, when we feel a bit uncertain about the conditions in our local environment. Social scientists assert, as we all grow to maturity, we develop these intuitions more or less, to speed our decision-making. They also assert that those feelings are not always reliable, we can be fooled. The book was very informative and also entertaining. It will take another read or two for me to absorb the tips offered to enhance the tools I presently employ in interaction with others. The book is definitely useful.

Gestures -- Revealed!

For anyone interested in human gestures as hobby or for their work, this is an excellent sorce of information. It is set up like a dictionary, with all the gestures you can think of plus their meanings and where the gesture has been sited. It's a very useful and interesting book for anyone wanting to study the human animal.

Low, low level...

This book is really a poor book ! Read in less than two hours, it may have an interest for people who have not the slightest idea about that subject... There is no science in that book ! I regret the few bucks I have paid for it...
If you read French and you want a really good book on non-verbal communication, try Jacques Corraze "Les communications non-verbales" that is a top level book !

Great book and lots of information

I live in Southern Illinois and my wife and I often ride our motorcycles throughout Southern Illinois and Northern Missouri. We often pass through areas where you can tell there used to be something buit it has long since been torn down or abandoned. A lot of these towns and ruins are explained in this book and it was pretty cool to know the history of these towns. I would suggest the author do a follow-up to this book with the history of many of the small towns in Illinois. There are many great places to see in Southern Illinois and Northern Missouri. Lots of old history and heritage. If you are a history buff or are just curious about the area around you in Southern Illinois, definitely purcase this book for some insight.
