I dearly love this book. Someone gave me an antique copy when I was in grade school and it's wonderful now to have it on my Kindle. For readers who don't know Jerome K. Jerome, this is an amusing introduction to a very droll writer who was also an acute observer of his time. And it's a quick read for aficionados of Christmas ghost stories.

Jerome K. Jerome will make you laugh out loud. Told After Supper is a humorous and entertaining book. It is in the Victorian style when ghost stories were often told at Christmas. The book is a quick read, and could be read in one sitting. Told after supper is going to be a traditional Christmas read for me now.

About the Author

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is both the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet, although he describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. I used this as my sole source to study for the CIMA. It contains many practical ideas and concepts that can also be implemented in an advisory practice. A bit pricey, but that's part of the textbook racket, and the reason for 4 stars.

The trend of looking at well known stories from the point of view of supporting characters is not a new one, but - if done well - is always interesting. Louise Anne Bateman does it very well here. Drawing on a well chosen mixture of the stage musical and the original novel, plus her own inventiveness, we find out more about Meg Giry, her mother and their connections with the Phantom.
There is a true sense of the story that we know happening "just over there" and the author has clearly had fun inserting references to lines and lyrics in her text. (This never feels forced or imposed though and she is also unafraid to change or use different versions where appropriate.)
Since it is likely readers will be VERY familiar with the key story points, the plot manages to do a lot more than simply tick these off and you find yourself really drawn into the action that's happening alongside the action you already know about.
Louise Anne Bateman is clearly a Phan, but I wouldn't say readers would have to be obsessive fans of either source material. Anyone looking for an exciting and enjoyable story will find it here. I hope the sequel is on its way!

This Book is NOT for Phan Girls! I

If you're looking for the redeemable, misunderstood sheep-in-wolf's-clothing that most Phantom fanfic presents to us, then move along. This book is not for you! In this novel, which is a retelling of the story from Meg Giry's POV, Erik is a frightening, violent, possibly psychopathic ghoul....AND I LOVE IT! This is the Phantom novel I've been waiting for since I finished Susan Kay's now classic epic. Tense, scary at time, and packed with intrigue and sharp dialogue, I couldn't put this book down. I drank it up like a fine wine and felt heady at the end. And no, it's not a Meg/Erik romance, but the relationship between those two is very cleverly written and interesting.
The author writes all the characters well. She borrows from ALW and Gaston Leroux which I found to be a positive thing in that she blends the two very different versions well. No Raoul bashing here, which is another point to the author. In fact, she doesn't really bash anyone but leaves you, the reader, to decide for yourself for whom to root. This book was a refreshing change from what is becoming a tired old genre.
So why the four stars instead of five? Like another reviewer posted, sometimes modern slang creeps in. I think the authorwould do better to be carful of that in future, but otherwise an excellent piece of Phanfic! I loved it.
SPOILER: If you are super sensitive to animal cruelty, you might want to be forewarned. There is an early scene involving a cat that was a little over the top but as it's only a tiny part in a vast story, I let it pass. Others might not be so tolerant. Just be aware!

The Angel's Shadow is a darkly mesmerizing tale about Meg's irresistible draw to the Angel of Music--and the ways in which it will change her forever.
