A Dog Like Ralph, by Clare Cogbill

'Clare shows an uncanny understanding of dog psyche, maybe because she trained as a veterinary nurse; but I prefer to think that she has a natural gift. She provides a voice for the dogs to speak directly to the reader, which makes this book unique and fascinating. This is a story which can be enjoyed by older children as well as adults.' From a review by Joyce Wilson in The Keswick Reminder, The Lake District, UK. This is the humorous, sometimes sad, and eventually uplifting story of Ralph and the friends he has met along the way. He is a rescue dog with a difficult past who loves other dogs, is frightened of people and cars and mesmerized by cats and rabbits. It is partly told through his eyes and describes how what he has experienced before has affected how he interacts with those around him. Entwined with his story, Clare, his new owner and the author of this book, who has a total of over 30 years experience of working with animals and teaching veterinary nursing and animal care and welfare, tells of the joys of having him as a companion and how, through gentle nurturing and the arrival of his compatriots, Peggy and Luella, his whole outlook on life has changed. She also writes with a great deal of passion about the pitfalls of a society that has resulted in Ralph being the way he is, and of some of the other issues that are contributing to the problems faced by dogs today. By the author of 'Lilac Haze' - A true story of live kidney donation. Also 'A Soldier Like Jack' - based on one family's true story of life in World War One.

About the Author
Clare Cogbill was born in the mid-1960's and, like many youngsters, from an early age she developed a deep passion for animals and their welfare. She has fifteen years experience of working with domesticated animals in rescue shelters, and as a veterinary nurse in both welfare and private practice environments. She also has over twenty years experience as a lecturer, with much of her teaching being about animals and their welfare. She is passionate about reading, preferring biographies to fiction, and where those books contain some reference to the human-animal bond, all the better. She also enjoys reading books which have been made into films, but still can't quite work out whether it's better to read the book or to see the film first! Clare is besotted by dogs and anything four-legged (she prefers creatures to have no more than four legs!). Most of her adult life has been spent working with, or talking about, animals. She lives in Scotland with her husband and three rescue dogs... aka substitute children, since the real child has now flown the nest and is following his own dreams.

How a Rescue Dog Can Teach us New Tricks: Tricks of Love and Patience
By Carol Flynn
Claire Cogbill knows her dogs. She's worked with rescue dogs for years, taught animal behavior at a veterinary college, and practiced veterinary nursing. But she also, with rare honesty, shares the things she still needed to learn about her own wonderful, frightened rescue dog. Ralph helps to tell the story, revealing his many fears and desires. He doesn't like us to smile so widely with our big teeth. They're too scary. And he hates how we reach down suddenly to ruffle his ears. Cogbill reveals with great tenderness the mysteries of a dog's memory, the way he stores up pain and pleasure and remembers lost loves. When we understand the complexities of the animal, we can better help him conquer his fears. When Ralph runs off, frightened by traffic, we know Cogbill will find him and bring him home to safety and love. She makes us believe that if we move with confidence, offering steady servings of patience and love, we can too. Read this inspiring book!!!

Loved this tale of a real doggy family; issues and all!
By S. Kenny
I was told about this book and quickly purchased it last night and have just finished reading it a few minutes ago. I fell for the characters of Ralph, Peggy and Luella along with the briefly mentioned but obviously no less loved other furbabies within the story. It is heart warming and at times tear jerking but more than anything it is a story that is based firmly in reality. I loved this about it.

None of the over the top Disneyfied descriptions, the author tells you like it was and like it is for her family and you root for them the whole way through. I have read this in 2 days, not because it is short but because I needed to know what happens. I'm so glad I did.

Good luck Ralph, Peggy and their humans.

Heartwarming and funny
By Rose
I really loved this book, it's clearly by someone who knows and has a great empathy with animals. At times it made me cry and at other times laugh out loud and left me wanting more. I do hope Claire Cogbill will write a sequel, so we can find out what Ralph and co are up to now. Although I've never met any of the dogs in the book, I was left feeling as though I knew them and wanted to spend a bit more time in their company. If you want to read a genuine, heartwarming and funny book, I can thoroughly recommend this feel good read.
